Something I thought of is: what if the sample tubes fell off and there was a windstorm. I saw a Nova show last night with a thing called ‘Fetch’ yes it could track it but a windstorm could blow the samples away and you wouldn’t get them because it would be maybe fat in the air or just out of range of the rover.

@TimePro So, you really believe that a parachute can be used without practically no air resistance and at this level of speed...simple Mathematics tell you that IT IS IMPOSSIBLE!!! I'm a math student and calculated all the official statements and parameters from "NASA" sorry but your after spoken "arguments" are POINTLES. 7BTW did these Magicians explained how they made it through the Van Allen Belt??!!😂😂😂 It's just ridicolous to me🙊🙉🙈 but the so called "Space" is like a Religion they branded into your Mind through Movies, School and so on. Everyone can believe what they want..."May the Force be with you"
TimePro 3 цагийн өмнө
@Rico Last Yea. That 1% atmosphere is ENOUGH to use a parachute upon subsonic speeds since the rover is more lighter. And In the future, starship will use aerodynamic drag from mars atmosphere to slow down to conduct its landing burn. 1% doesn’t mean there’s no air. Also, NASAS BEEN Saying there's only 1% of the atmosphere on mars. Your "research" was pointless.
Rico Last
Rico Last 11 цагийн өмнө
I did some research and this is impossible. Because there is only 1% of the atmosphere like here on Earth!!! It is simply impossible. But it's just one example from many why this is a LIE!! YOU SHOULD DO SOME RESEARCH Don't believe these scifi Stuff without proofing it...but sleep well...🙏✌
TimePro 13 цагийн өмнө
DO SOME RESEARCH. Mars DOES have an atmosphere. One that is enough to use a parachute for a short amount of time.

So the chute opens like there is air? What has allows the chute to float equipment down🤔
James Berglund
James Berglund Өдрийн өмнө
Yes, that's what parachutes do - Mars has an atmosphere. It's very thin compared to Earth's (about 1% as dense as Earth), enough that a parachute will help slow something down but will not finish the job, which is why they cut the parachute and finish the landing with rockets. Also know that the craft was going about 14,000 MPH when the parachute opened. In Earth's denser atmosphere, opening a parachute at that speed would just destroy the parachute (assuming the metallic craft itself hadn't burnt up by that point, that's REALLY fast), but in the ultra-thin Martian atmosphere there's much less air for the parachute to grab so it can survive that speed.

James Berglund
James Berglund 23 цагийн өмнө
The little drone (Ingenuity) hasn't flown yet, probably sometime next month. The engineering behind the drone is pretty interesting - you are correct, the Martian atmosphere is extremely thin, so a given drone design that would work on Earth would not work on Mars. This is largely due to a drone's ability to generate lift - the ability of an airfoil (like a wing or helicopter blade) to generate lift is a function of several variables, most importantly 1) the surface area of the airfoil (bigger airfoils generate more lift than smaller airfoils), the speed the airfoil through the air (faster blades and faster wings generate more lift, and a fixed-wing aircraft generates more lift when going faster), the density of the air (wings generate more lift in dense air, on earth an airplane generates more lift at lower altitudes and less lift at higher altitudes), and 4) the angle of attack of the airfoil (the angle of the propeller or wing relative to its path through air - a higher angle generates more lift, to a point - too much will stall the wing). The one advantage Mars has over Earth is the decrease in gravity - the Ingenuity drone weighs about 4 lbs on Earth, but only about 1.5 lbs on Mars, so the propellers only need to generate a little over 1.5 lbs of lift to take off rather than 4 lbs. But that's as far as the bonuses go as the Martian atmosphere is only 1% as dense as Earth's at the surface, so a given drone drone design on Earth would only produce about 1% of the same lift on Mars, which is a huge decrease in lift generation, so a new design is needed. Referring to the lift-generation variables above, while we can't alter the density of the Martian atmosphere, we can alter the other lift-generation variables - size of the airfoil (propeller blade), speed of the airfoil (how fast the blades are spinning), and angle of attack of the blades. If you look at the design for the Ingenuity drone, you'll notice it looks goofy - it's nearly ALL blades. And compare it to an Earth drone of an equivalent weight: Notice the Ingenuity drone, compared to the Earth drone, has HUGE propellers (increased area) and also have a fairly large angle of attack. The Mars drone's blades will also spin at about 2500 RPM (very fast), nearly 5x faster than a similar drone on Earth (increased velocity). Those engineering changes are purposefully meant to overcome the thin Martian atmosphere and generate the 1.5 lbs of lift needed to take off.

If humanity ever gains the technology and resources to actually terraform Mars... I hope that we will use it to heal the earth from the pollution and climate change we humans have caused. There is only one planet in the entire known universe that is perfectly suited for our species, and its this paradise we call Earth. Love it our hate it, it’s or home and it’s the only planet we can step outside and enjoy the sun and fresh air and sprawling life. I hope we learn to take care of this planet before we even think about leaving to find another one. Regardless, I am always in awe of what the brilliant minds at NASA are able to pull of these days. The descent stage was going nearly 14,000 MPH when the parachute deployed. The only way it would not have been ripped to shreds is if the atmosphere was very, very thin, like on Mars (you got the 1% right, not sure what the 1/3rd means in this case - Mars is 1/3 the size of Earth, is where you got that number I assume, but that's not really relevant to this).

@onion savoya okay, to address your points: 1) "uh...mars is covered in lethal radiation" - The Martian atmosphere does not block radiation as well as the Earth's, but it's not lethal, especially for an astronaut wearing a space suit or within a habitat, which they'd need to be anyway to breathe. Not sure why that's a major point for you here. 2) "So what exactly are you looking forward to finding" - Signs of past life, and the past atmospheric and geologic history of Mars. You know, research, learning more about the universe. 3) "Water? Undrinkable" - Water is water, in the sense you mean H2O...if it's there, some filtration and processing would make it drinkable. Mars water would not be inherently different than water anywhere else. 4) "Earth? Ungrowable" - Not without some assistance - soil needs a microbial component to be fertile. With some time and processing there's no reason to think Martian regolith couldn't be turned into soil. 5) "Air? Unbreathable" - correct, it's only 1% as dense as Earth's atmosphere, and mostly CO2. We could not breathe Martian air as-is. 6) "Fire? Radiation" - what? 7) "Precious metals? Retrievable?" Probably nothing we don't already have on earth, but who knows what we'll find. I also don't think that's really a motivation for most of these missions. 8) "Didn't gold erupt from the solar surface? Sprinkling gold throughout space?" - One idea is that most of Earth's gold came from a period of gold-rich meteor bombardment not long after the Earth formed some 4.5 billion years ago. But no, it wasn't "erupted" from the sun. 9) "Are you trying to locate gold?" - No. Exploring Mars is not some sort of resource expedition. Even if we did find gold on Mars, it wouldn't make sense to mine it there to send back to Earth. We have gold here. Exploring Mars is about learning more about our solar system and one of our nearest planetary neighbors and the potential for life having arisen elsewhere. That's called research and scientific discovery which inevitably helps humanity and leads to better things. If that still sounds like a waste of time and resources to you then that's your call but it's sad to see someone with so little foresight.

Yes, several (Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, now Perseverance) along with a few stationary landers (like InSight). They are of course not all the same both in where they landed and what questions they were aiming to answer. Not only is Mars a big planet (so visiting one single spot wouldn't be super informative) but our technology gets better with time and with each new mission there are new questions we want to try and answer based on what we've seen from the previous missions. Science is an ongoing process.

There really is no dark side of the moon. All parts of the moon are in the dark about half the time and in sunlight about half the time. This is why the moon goes through the phases that we see from earth every month. There is however the far side of the moon that always faces away from earth. A spacecraft can land there and its already been done once. The big problem is communicating with a spacecraft whenever it's on the far side because the radio signals get blocked by the moon. As such to communicate with a spacecraft on the far side you will need a relay satellite in space behind the moon to get the radio signals to and from the spacecraft that is located on the far side of the moon.
